Course Description and Credit Information

Course description

This course is a comprehensive introduction to wind erosion and conservation practices landscape architects can implement. This course provides an overview of Wind Erosion Concepts, including the transport processes of soil by wind, initiation of wind erosion, and factors influencing wind erosion. The Wind Erosion Equation model (WEQ) and the various factors that impact wind erosion are discussed. Conservation practices related to wind erosion, including windbreaks and shelterbelts, among other design strategies are presented. Lastly, the Wind Erosion Protection System, its modeling, and use in predicting soil conservation systems. Throughout the course, students will learn about the fundamental principles of wind erosion, its effects on the environment, and the various conservation and design practices that can help mitigate its impact.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will understand the three different transport processes involved in wind erosion: saltation, soil creep, and suspension.

2. Participants will learn the factors that contribute to wind erosion, including wind speed, soil properties, and ground cover.

3. Participants will understand the Wind Erosion Equation (WEQ) model and its components to help predict how their design could reduce the erosion.

4. Participants will understand the various design techniques to prevent or minimize wind erosion.
