Course Description and Credit Information

Course Description:

Creating Monarch Habitats for Schools and Communities introduces landscape architects to the ecological, educational, and community value of designing habitat spaces that support monarch butterflies and other pollinators. The course explores how school grounds, public landscapes, parks, community spaces, and small urban sites can be transformed into functional habitat through the use of milkweed, nectar plants, reduced pesticide use, site planning, and long-term stewardship. Participants will learn how monarch habitat projects can support biodiversity, environmental education, community engagement, and resilient landscape design.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the ecological importance of monarch butterflies and the role of habitat loss in pollinator decline.
  2. Identify key design elements needed to create monarch-supportive landscapes, including milkweed, nectar plants, shelter, and appropriate site conditions.
  3. Describe how schools and community spaces can be used as educational and ecological demonstration landscapes.
  4. Apply basic planning and maintenance strategies that support long-term monarch habitat success in public and community-based landscapes.
