Course Description and Credit Information
This lecture gives an overview of the gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth's surface due to subsurface movement of earth materials. Moreover, it will discuss the land subsidence caused by groundwater withdrawal in California, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley. The webinar will also tackle and explain the groundwater aquifer structure. Lastly, it will show the effects of subsidence which includes damage to buildings and infrastructure and increased flood risk in low-lying areas to name a few.
Learning Objectives:
1. Increase knowledge about the compaction of susceptible aquifer systems caused by excessive groundwater pumping.
2. Be taught on the importance of various methods of land-surface elevation (and elevation change) measurement to leverage the diverse spatial and temporal scales of datasets.
3. Grasp a better understanding on thesubsidence processes, measurements, analyses, and consequences.
