Course Description and Credit Information
Course Description:
This course focuses on irrigation management after turf removal, xeriscape installation, and other landscape conversions. Landscape architects will learn why irrigation systems often need to be redesigned—not simply reduced—when plant palettes, hydrozones, soil exposure, and canopy goals change. The course covers establishment watering, drip conversion, controller scheduling, pressure regulation, emitter layout, seasonal adjustments, and post-conversion troubleshooting so converted landscapes deliver long-term water savings without plant failure.
Learning objectives
1. Explain why irrigation must be recalibrated after turf-to-low-water landscape conversions.
2. Identify irrigation components commonly used in converted landscapes, including drip, emitters, valves, filters, and pressure regulation.
3. Develop establishment and long-term irrigation strategies for drought-tolerant plantings.
4. Recognize common post-conversion problems such as overspray, poor hydrozoning, leaks, and uneven distribution.
