Course Description:

This course introduces fungal disease identification and management for ornamental plants in designed landscapes. Participants learn how moisture, humidity, airflow, plant stress, sanitation, spacing, irrigation timing, and host susceptibility influence disease development. The course reviews practical integrated pest management strategies, including accurate diagnosis, cultural controls, resistant plant selection, pruning, debris removal, and appropriate use of fungicides when warranted and legally permitted.

 

Learning objectives

1. Identify common conditions that favor fungal disease development in ornamental landscapes.

2. Distinguish between cultural, mechanical, and chemical management options.

3. Apply integrated pest management principles to reduce disease pressure.

4. Explain how design decisions such as spacing, irrigation, and plant selection affect disease risk.
