Course Description and Credit Information

This presentation centers on the historic low-density, single-use, and auto-dependent office parks that house many of California’s most dynamic business enterprises. Here, we will discuss the challenges often met while transforming the suburban office landscape into thriving space. Professor Louise Mozingo tackles the elements of a resource-efficient office landscape and also provide an account beginning from the post WWII era of the suburban office landscape in the US.

The historic account of the evolution of the suburban office landscape in the United States is discussed from its origins with big corporations in the post second world war era until the most recent projects unveiled at the heart of Silicon Valley. The needs for greater density, multi-use, and public transportation as a way to have more resource efficient landscapes provides unique challenges with regard to the suburban large office parks of the post war era. These challenges, influences, and potential solutions are discussed.

2. Participants will comprehend the influences and factors that are now affecting the planning of existing and new suburban office parks with respect to resource efficiency and the need for thriving spaces.
