Course Description and Credit Information

Course Description:

This course introduces landscape architects to soil sourcing, reclamation, and vegetation management strategies for disturbed landscapes. Using surface coal mining, North Dakota reclamation, soil sourcing, and temperate grassland weed-management examples, the course explains how soil surveys, soil characterization, soil handling, suitable plant growth material, respread depth, and landscape-scale weed control influence revegetation success. Participants will examine how soil conditions, site history, weed biology, target species, grazing, ecological corridors, and management sequencing affect long-term recovery. The course supports stronger reclamation planning for mined lands, infrastructure disturbance, grasslands, and post-construction restoration.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how soil sourcing and characterization influence reclamation success.
  2. Identify soil properties that affect rooting, water movement, and vegetation establishment.
  3. Describe how soil handling and respread depth affect disturbed-land recovery.
  4. Apply landscape-scale weed management concepts to grassland reclamation and revegetation.
