Course Description and Credit Information
Course Description:
This course introduces landscape architects to soil sourcing, reclamation, and vegetation management strategies for disturbed landscapes. Using surface coal mining, North Dakota reclamation, soil sourcing, and temperate grassland weed-management examples, the course explains how soil surveys, soil characterization, soil handling, suitable plant growth material, respread depth, and landscape-scale weed control influence revegetation success. Participants will examine how soil conditions, site history, weed biology, target species, grazing, ecological corridors, and management sequencing affect long-term recovery. The course supports stronger reclamation planning for mined lands, infrastructure disturbance, grasslands, and post-construction restoration.
Learning objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how soil sourcing and characterization influence reclamation success.
- Identify soil properties that affect rooting, water movement, and vegetation establishment.
- Describe how soil handling and respread depth affect disturbed-land recovery.
- Apply landscape-scale weed management concepts to grassland reclamation and revegetation.
