Course Description and Credit Information
Course Description:
This course introduces landscape architects to soil health management and sulfur’s role in soil fertility, plant establishment, and landscape performance. Using North Dakota and Northern Great Plains research examples, the course examines soil organic carbon, aggregation, compaction, macropores, no-till, manure, cover crops, soil recovery expectations, sulfur cycling, sulfate availability, sulfur sources, soil testing limitations, and the 4Rs of nutrient management. Participants will learn how long-term soil management and nutrient decisions influence restoration, reclamation, stormwater landscapes, and post-construction planting success.
Learning objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how soil health affects plant establishment, water movement, and landscape performance.
- Describe how carbon, aggregation, compaction, and macropores influence soil recovery.
- Identify how sulfur cycling, sulfate availability, and nutrient sources affect plant growth.
- Apply soil health and sulfur management concepts to restoration and post-construction landscapes.
