Course Description:

This session covers the current theories that surround socially and ecologically engaged and remedial art making; meaning art that aims to affect the landscape it is made about, as well as motivations for and assertions about this genre of artistic practice. There is discussion on how to address the following questions: How to address aesthetic and ecological concerns simultaneously? How to address environmental and social concerns simultaneously?

In relation to these modernist examples presented, what types of materials to used in art, and why did an artist choose those materials for the piece? For post-modern examples presented, the concepts of environmental statements from artists are discussed. For contemporary art, connective, relational, and reciprocity aesthetics are explored.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the current theories surrounding social and ecological remedial art making.

2. Understand the motivations and assertions related to artistry in landscape architecture.

3. Learn about aesthetic and environmental concerns as well as the connection, relations, and reciprocity of artistry.
