Course Description and Credit Information
Course Description:
Protecting Honey Bees: Integrated Pest Management for Varroa Mites introduces landscape architects to the importance of pollinator protection within managed landscapes, with a focus on honey bee health and the threat posed by Varroa mites. The course explains how Varroa mites affect bee colonies, why they are a major concern for pollinator survival, and how Integrated Pest Management practices can reduce harm while supporting healthier ecosystems. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how landscape planning, plant selection, pesticide awareness, and habitat-sensitive management can contribute to pollinator resilience.
Learning objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain why honey bees and other pollinators are important to ecological health, food systems, and landscape performance.
- Identify the basic threat Varroa mites pose to honey bee colonies and why mite management is important.
- Describe how Integrated Pest Management can reduce pest pressure while limiting unnecessary chemical impacts on pollinators.
- Recognize landscape design and maintenance practices that support honey bee health and pollinator-friendly environments.
