Course Description and Credit Information

Course Description:

Off-site Stormwater Management to Promote Green Infrastructure introduces landscape architects to alternative compliance strategies that use off-site stormwater management to expand green infrastructure implementation beyond individual project boundaries. The course explains how stormwater retention credit programs, MS4 permit requirements, funding mechanisms, stakeholder coordination, and technical assistance can help communities manage runoff while creating broader environmental and social benefits. Participants will learn how off-site stormwater approaches can support watershed-scale planning, improve community outcomes, and provide flexible options for meeting stormwater management requirements when on-site controls are limited or infeasible.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of off-site stormwater management in supporting green infrastructure and watershed-scale runoff reduction.
  2. Identify how stormwater retention credits, alternative compliance programs, and MS4 requirements can influence project planning and implementation.
  3. Describe key technical, regulatory, and stakeholder considerations involved in developing off-site stormwater management programs.
  4. Recognize how off-site green infrastructure investments can improve community outcomes, support underserved areas, and provide co-benefits beyond stormwater control.
