Course Description and Credit Information

Course Description:

This course introduces landscape architects to federal geospatial and hydrologic tools that support land cover analysis, elevation assessment, hydrography interpretation, and stream-crossing planning. Participants will explore MRLC/NLCD land cover datasets, annual land cover change, the MRLC Viewer, USGS 3D Elevation Program data, the 3D Hydrography Program, lidar-derived elevation products, and The National Map. The course also includes stream-crossing content that explains how culverts, bridges, road-stream intersections, and hydraulic modeling affect aquatic passage, sediment transport, floodplain connectivity, and infrastructure resilience. A Massachusetts culvert replacement and stream-crossing modeling example demonstrates how field data, cross sections, hydraulic models, and design alternatives can support better crossing decisions. For landscape architects, the course supports stronger GIS-based site analysis, watershed planning, green infrastructure planning, transportation corridor assessment, conservation design, and climate-resilient infrastructure planning.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how land cover, elevation, and hydrography data support landscape planning decisions.
  2. Identify federal geospatial tools used for watershed, terrain, and environmental analysis.
  3. Describe how stream crossings affect aquatic passage, sediment transport, and floodplain connectivity.
  4. Apply geospatial and hydraulic modeling concepts to planning, restoration, and infrastructure projects.
