Course Description and Credit Information

Design must encompass the potential for natural disasters such as fires, snow and avalanche science, and earthquakes. Understanding how these natural events effect the land and is a design consideration.  This lecture gives an overview of the different natural disasters we are experiencing and how we can prepare for this occurrences. Also, it will further discuss the visible effect of the process of combustion. In addition, the webinar will explain the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting from a sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Lastly, it will define the mass of snow, ice, and rocks falling rapidly down a mountainside.  Understanding these natural occurrences which are becoming more common in relevant areas, is critical to design thinking.

Learning Objectives:

1.Understand how design is impacted by natural disasters, fires, earthquakes, and avalanches.

2. Increase knowledge about the history of earthquakes and ways to prepare for this phenomena.

3.  Be taught on the importance of wildland fires and why they are becoming more of a problem.
 4.  Grasp a better understanding on Avalanche Forecasting and ecology including ways on how to map snow depth.
