Course Description and Credit Information

Campus Planning

The lecture covers the rich history of landscape design of the Univeristy of Nebraska - Lincoln. It covers the initial plantings around the University Hall, the first building on campus, to modern greenspaces.

In addition, the talk will also go through the work involved in creating some of the campus' most iconic spaces; the legacy of Charles E. Bessey; and William H. Dunman, landscape gardener from 1906 to his death in 1946, whose love for tropical plants is demonstrated in early campus photos.

Learning Objectives:

1. Have new appreciation for the beauty of campus landscapes through the history of the university.

2. Be taught on the importance of an outdoor site plan or master plan to create a sustainable landscape design.

3. Grasp a better understanding of the amount of work it takes to care for a campus covering large acres of greenspace.
